The 2012/2013 school year will be Chestnut
Elementary's third year as a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)
Choice school, the only one at the elementary level in the county. See this video to learn more about STEM.
Chestnut
offers students the traditional curriculum with a unique emphasis on science,
technology, engineering, and math. Students are immersed in rigorous
problem-based and project-based learning, including investigations, virtual
labs, simulations, and community expeditions. Students are highly engaged in
hands-on learning activities with exciting opportunities for enrichment
electives, which refine their special talents and interests.
Osceola County parents/guardians with children
in Grades K-5 who have students attending one of the following elementary
schools have the opportunity to choose Chestnut for their children to attend
instead of their home-zoned school for the 2012/2013 school year: Bellalago
Academy, Deerwood Elementary, Koa Elementary, Pleasant Hill Elementary,
Poinciana Academy of Fine Arts, Reedy Creek Elementary, and Sunrise Elementary.
Parents and students interested in Chestnut Elementary School for Science and
Engineering are encouraged to attend one of the following informational
meetings planned to share the program and its potential for your children.
Parents and students will have an opportunity to tour the school, including the
STEM Labs, and will be involved in various activities and challenges that
students are involved in daily:
--Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. in
the media center: Visitors will be able to tour STEM labs, visit the
Planetarium, complete engineering challenges, and visit the soil and hydroponic
gardens.
--Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. in
the media center: Visitors will be able to tour STEM labs; conduct hands-on
science experiments in the areas of chemistry, electricity, forensics, matter,
and archaeology; and become photographers and news anchors in the TV Production
area.
--Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. in
the media center: Visitors will be able to tour STEM labs, hear the
band and chorus perform, see the dance performance, be involved in hands-on
technology with GPS hand-held devices, and participate in art activities.
Each Showcase will conclude at 7:00 p.m.
There will also be an opportunity to speak to current Choice
parents at the Parent Panel.

de la Escuela Elemental de Ciencia e Ingeniería Chestnut para el Año
Escolar 2012/2013
El año escolar 2012/2013, será el tercer año de
haber establecido la Escuela Elemental Chestnut como escuela de
selección de Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemática (STEM, por sus
siglas en inglés), la única de nivel elemental en el Condado. Chestnut,
les ofrece a los estudiantes, un programa de estudios tradicional con énfasis
exclusivo en ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemática. Los
estudiantes están involucrados en un aprendizaje riguroso, basado en problemas
y proyectos, incluyendo investigaciones, laboratorios virtuales, simulaciones y
expediciones a la comunidad. Los estudiantes están altamente enfocados en
actividades de aprendizaje activo, con emocionantes oportunidades de clases
electivas de enriquecimiento, las cuales refinan sus talentos e intereses
especiales.
Los padres/tutores del condado Osceola, que
tengan hijos que asisten desde el jardín de infantes hasta 5to grado a una de
las siguientes escuelas elementales, tienen la oportunidad de seleccionar a Chestnut
como escuela para sus hijos, en vez de su escuela de base asignada para el año

Exhortamos a los padres y estudiantes que estén interesados en la Escuela
Elemental de Ciencia e Ingeniería Chestnut, a que asistan a una de las
siguientes reuniones informativas para que escuchen sobre el programa y lo que
ofrece a sus hijos. Los padres y estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de
caminar por la escuela, incluyendo los laboratorios STEM y participar de
varias actividades y retos en los cuales están involucrados los estudiantes
diariamente:
--miércoles, 14 de marzo de 2012, a las 5:30
p.m. en la biblioteca: los visitantes podrán
entrar a los laboratorios STEM, visitar el Planetario, trabajar con
retos de ingeniería y visitar los jardines para agricultura en tierra e
hidroponía.
--martes, 27 de marzo de 2012, a las 5:30 p.m.
en la biblioteca: los visitantes podrán
entrar a los laboratorios STEM, llevar a cabo experimentos activos de
ciencia en las áreas de química, electricidad, forense, materia y arqueología;
y convertirse en fotógrafos y presentadores de noticias en el área de
producción para televisión.
--jueves, 5 de abril de 2012, a las 5:30 p.m. en
la biblioteca: los visitantes podrán
entrar a los laboratorios STEM, escuchar a la banda y el coro, ver los
bailes, participar de tecnología activa con aparatos como el Sistema de
Posición Global (GPS, por sus siglas en inglés) y participar en
actividades de arte.
Cada exposición terminará a las 7:00 p.m.
También, tendrán la oportunidad de conversar con padres de estudiantes
actuales durante el panel de padres.
